Suruga Bamboo Crafts
Suruga Takesensuji Thin Crafts, a traditional craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. This is a craftsmanship developed in Suruga, a region associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu. It has a long history, and became popular after the middle of the Edo period, when a unique technique was established that combined countless delicate bamboo threads. In contrast to bamboo products from other regions, which are made by weaving flat strips, Suruga Takesenji Thinwork is characterized by its delicate, curved finish using thin round strips. Be sure to bring home a piece that takes advantage of the texture, color, and luster of bamboo.
